Karbonn Mobile is preparing to release its second-generation Android One smartphone, according to the Executive Director of Karbonn Mobiles, Shashin Devsare, who recently spoke at the Dream 500 Million Smartphones event in New Delhi. The successor to the Karbonn Sparkle V  is scheduled to arrive in the first quarter of 2015.

The news reaffirms Karbonn and Google’s long term commitment to the Android One project. Despite sales making a slow start in India, Mr Devsare insisted that the response to Android one had, overall, been a positive.

We have had an excellent response on Android One devices. We believe that Android One will mature over time. – Shashin Devsare Karbonn Mobiles

No hardware details have been given out at this point, but the project’s ethos dictates that the second-generation will be aimed at providing a consistent platform for more affordable hardware, just like the first wave of Android One smartphones. A Qualcomm processor is rumored this time around, but all we can expect for certain is a well rounded budget offering.

The two other first generation Android One partners, Micromax and Spice, have not announced any of their own plans yet. A number of other OEMs are also expected to participate in the second batch of Android One smartphones. It will be interesting to see what effect this competition has on a smartphone range with strict hardware specifications.
