It's not just you: Google Fi subscribers report mobile data issues

Google Fi is a pretty solid MVNO, offering simple plans, a built-in VPN, data roaming on several plans, and more. Unfortunately, it sounds like the service hit a major snag late yesterday.

Some Google Fi subscribers reported on Reddit that they were unable to use mobile data, while a few users said calls were also affected. “Your SIM card is no longer active,” read an official alert seen by affected subscribers.

Google support agents are apparently able to fix the issue, but many customers reported long waiting times. Fortunately, one successful workaround involved disabling calls to international numbers for a few seconds and then re-enabling this option. This can be accomplished by opening the Fi app, visiting the Home tab, then tapping Calls to non-US numbers under the International features section. Some users reported that the issue resurfaced after a while, but that repeating the workaround helped.

Google posted a banner message on its Fi support page late last night to acknowledge this SIM card issue. The message added that the company was working to resolve the problem. Check out the screenshot below.

This banner alert was still present as of 2:45 AM ET, suggesting that the issue hasn’t been fixed just yet. So we hope a fix comes sooner rather than later for affected Google Fi subscribers. Otherwise, you’ll just have to try the international calls workaround for now.
