Nest rumored to launch a 4K camera that won't actually record in 4K

Nest, the connected home subsidiary of Alphabet, is rumored to be working on a number of upcoming devices. One such product was reported today, and it sounds pretty interesting. The report says Nest is working on a home security camera that will support 4K resolution. However, the rumor claims the camera will only record in 1080p resolution.

The report comes from Android Police, citing unnamed sources. It claims that Nest’s upcoming security camera will use its 4K hardware to zoom in on images, and those images will be in 1080p resolution. The idea is that if this security camera’s sensors are triggered by movement, it will automatically zoom in on that movement, and the image it finds will be recorded in 1080p, versus zooming in on an image that’s already in 1080p resolution.

The report claims that the actual design for the 4K camera looks much like the current Nest Outdoor Camera, but it’s only for indoor use. The report adds that it will have a USB Type-C connection, along with an LED ring that is supposed to show when it is recording. The cost of this upcoming Nest camera is going to be bit pricey, according to the report, at around $300. The story says Nest is targeting an official announcement for the end of May, so we shouldn’t have to wait too long to see if this report is accurate.

Previously unconfirmed rumors about Nest’s upcoming products claim the company is working several other devices. One could be a cheaper version of its popular smart thermostat, along with another indoor camera that is supposed to identify specific people walking into the frame. The same rumors claim Nest may also be working on a home alarm system and a digital doorbell.
