(Update: OP3 will stick with AMOLED) OnePlus: “we are still making the OnePlus 3”
Original post, October 12: Some of you will have seen (quite a lot of ) rumors recently claiming that OnePlus has stopped manufacturing the OnePlus 3. Amidst claims of AMOLED shortages, a possible new device to replace the OP3 and all manner of other speculation, a OnePlus spokesman has confirmed to Android Authority that the company is indeed “still producing and selling the OnePlus 3”.
I can’t go so far as to say this means the AMOLED supply chain issue has miraculously sorted itself out though. OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei even posted a cryptic “AMOLED > LCD” comment on the OnePlus forum in answer to questions about AMOLED supply chain problems. Following the publication of this article though, Pei later tweeted the following:
OnePlus will be staying with Optic AMOLED displays for the foreseeable future.— Carl Pei (@getpeid) October 13, 2016
But a completely new replacement for the OnePlus 3 with a next-gen chipset? I don’t think so. Swapping out display tech due to problems meeting demand is one thing, discontinuing a flagship for a new device with a different display type and chipset doesn’t make a lot of sense. If OnePlus is thinking “successor”, it should be the OnePlus 4, not something to take out a mid-stride OP3.
Whether you believe OnePlus is secretly working on a new variant of the OnePlus or not, at the very least you can rest assured that production of the OnePlus 3 has not stopped and you will still be able to buy one. You might just have to wait a little while.
Does display type matter to you? What do you want to see in the OnePlus 4?
