Report: Samsung to begin mass-producing the Galaxy Note 7 in July, 5M units by release

Given the rapid rate at which news of Samsung’s unannounced Galaxy Note 7 is disseminating from the leak ledger, it’s safe to say that within mere weeks, the phone itself will be spotted in a hands-on holding not unlike what happened last year. With an expected launch of August 2nd, the floodgates are surely about to open, and indeed already have: just yesterday The Korea Herald confirmed an iris scanner. Today’s news involves the actual production plan for the product.

According to a new report by Korean website etnews, Samsung is set to start mass production of the Galaxy Note 7 in July and plans to have about 5 million devices ready for the expected release in August. More specifically:

According to an industry on the 15th, Samsung Electronics has started ordering parts to start producing its new Galaxy Note in next month and it also even revealed detailed information of size of mass production. Samsung Electronics is going to produce 2.5 million phones in July and August in total of 5 million phones. Considering that initial supply of Galaxy Note 5, which was released last year, was about 5 million copies in a quarter, Samsung Electronics is expecting that this new Galaxy Note will bring in better sales result.

Also mentioned in the piece is a bit about why Samsung is allegedly going to offer the phone earlier this year:

A reason why it is going to start producing new Galaxy Note one month earlier is because it wants to start selling it while introducing it at the same time. Its strategy is to have consumers’ early interests lead to actual purchase.

The piece also makes mention of the dual-edge display believed to be included on the Note 7, something that has already rubbed some potential consumers the wrong way in light of their dislike for such a curved creation. While it is largely believed that the Note 7 will indeed include a display in the same style as the Galaxy S7 Edge, it is not so clear as to if the OEM will be producing a “lesser” model, i.e. one with a standard flat display.

Given that Samsung has consistently released a standard variant along with each Edge offering, it is probably more probably that there will be a Galaxy Note 7 and a Galaxy Note 7 Edge. At the same time, given design renders that have been leaked of the Edge variant, the more dramatic – and productive – curve seen on the original Note Edge is likely to be eschewed in favor of the more subtle – and less substantial – variant seen on the mainstream Galaxy S smartphones.

To put things differently, 2016 will likely see the same dual phablet launch as last year’s Note 5 and S6 Edge+, with the sole difference being that the latter update will be branded as a Note.
