Showtime's library of movies and TV shows now available for offline viewing on mobile
With the increasing amount of TV streaming services out there, more and more companies are adding the ability to download and watch content without the need for an internet connection. Showtime has now confirmed it has added that feature to its mobile apps, allowing subscribers to download and watch films and TV shows without an internet connection.
The update is already available on both the main Showtime app, as well as the Showtime Anytime app for people who also watch the service via their pay TV provider. The apps now show a download button with each TV show episode or movie listing. Variety reports that smartphones can download videos in 540p or 720p resolution, and tablet owners can also go up to 1080p HD resolution.
Netflix added a way to download a small selection of its movies and TV shows in 2016, and rival Hulu has confirmed it will add that feature in the near future to its mobile apps. Amazon Prime Video also has offline video features for its apps, and the mobile apps for pay cable channels like Starz and Epix support that feature as well. The only premium cable TV channel that doesn’t offer this feature is HBO. There’s been no indication that will change anytime soon, as the company apparently doesn’t want to give that kind of access to its hugely popular shows like Game of Thrones, Silicon Valley and Westworld.
