Snap Inc. said to be working on more advanced Lenses
Snap Inc. introduced “Lenses” in 2015, an AR feature which would let users overlay animated objects onto their Snapchat selfies. It was evidently popular, as the company released an updated version of Lenses toward the end of last year known as World Lenses, which overlaid a selection of additional objects into a scene, such as snowflakes and hearts.
Now, the company is said to be taking Lenses a step further: instead of just adding effects to the frame, Snapchat is going to be able to overlay AR content onto specific objects in the environment.
According to The Information, the new lenses could be used to “layer an object like a blimp in the sky,” for example. Little else was revealed about the upcoming feature, but Snapchat is said to be facing pressure to deliver innovative new functionality to Snapchat ahead of the company going public in the coming weeks.
AR and VR are pretty hot trends right now, so it would make sense for the company to continue to target these areas for its new features, though the company has also recently ventured into hardware.
