WhatsApp beta is testing quick quotes
It looks like WhatsApp is experimenting with a new feature that lets you quickly reference a remark someone else previously made in the conversation with a nifty in-line quote. Although it’s one of the most popular apps in the world, WhatsApp has remained relatively minimalist for most of its run, so even seeing a small change like this is pretty interesting.
The feature is only rolling out to a handful of users running beta release v.2.16.118. To access it, you can long-press any message in the conversation. Like normal, starring, trash, copy, and forward will all appear, but you’ll also have a reply arrow. Tapping this will insert the sender and message text into your drafted message. Although this functionality may be limited on one-on-one conversations, it’s really easy to see how it could make group chats much easier to navigate. One disappointing oversight, however, is that it’s not possible to quickly quote longer chains of dialogue covering multiple messages.
With Facebook pushing more and more new features into Messenger including an array of new emoji and with the social giant looking for ways to better monetize both of its messaging platforms, it’s no surprise that they’re looking to increase functionality on these apps. No word yet regarding whether this feature will make it to a non-beta version of WhatsApp, but we’re not seeing any downsides, and it’d be a nice little tool to have.
