Xiaomi's product line-up continues to grow, now sells air purifiers too
Xiaomi may be best known for making waves in the smartphone market, but the company has ambitions to grow into a much broader consumer electronics vendor. The next product in its ever expanding line-up is its sub-$150 Mi Air Purifier.
The Mi Air Purifier is to go on sale exclusively in China, a global rollout has been ruled out for now. The purifier will cost 899 RMB, or a little under $150, and has already gone up for pre-orders in China. Full sale in the region will commence on December 16th.
While an Air Purifier may seem like an odd product to sell, China’s large cities, along with other areas in Asia, suffer heavily with air pollution problems. Xiaomi claims that the dual fan and four air duct system can produce 10,000 liters of clean air per minute and that it can filter out 99.99 percent of dangerous PM2.5 air particles. There’s also an app that sends alerts directly to your phone, including a measurement of your air quality and when your purifier needs a new filter.
Believe it or not, this probably isn’t the strangest product that Xiaomi sells right now. The company also has its own Mi branded blood pressure monitor, SIM card cutting tool, an optical mouse, USB LED touch, and WiFi router, as well as the more standard Smart-TV set and a huge range smartphone accessories.
Xiaomi certainly has some ambitious plans to build up its product portfolio, including recently announced investments into Smart Home technologies and online video content. The company may have quickly grown to become the world’s third largest smartphone manufacturer, but 2015 will test to see if Xiaomi can replicate this success with other products.
