Amazon launches Echo Dot with built-in LED clock, raises price a bit
At its hardware event today, Amazon unveiled a new iteration of its popular smart home accessory, the Amazon Echo Dot. The new installment in the series features an LED display at the front that shows a clock.
The LED display isn’t limited to just a clock, though. It can also show timers, alarms, and even the outside temperature.
If you know Amazon’s hardware lineup well, you might remember that the Amazon Echo Spot had a small display that also could act as an alarm clock. However, the Echo Spot also had a camera, which didn’t make it ideal for putting in the bedroom — you know, where most people keep alarm clocks. The Amazon Echo Dot with clock doesn’t have a camera, so Amazon is hoping it will be the bedside table device-of-choice.
To emphasize the Echo Dot’s ideal bedroom placement, you can tap the top of the device when an alarm is going off to get an extra nine minutes of snooze time, just like a traditional alarm clock.
Obviously, the Amazon Echo Dot with clock will also come with all the usual Alexa features, including voice commands and responses.
Unfortunately, the new LED screen causes the price to go up for this new Echo device. The usual price for an Echo Dot is $49.99, but the Echo Dot with clock will start at $59.99. Luckily, Amazon is keeping the normal third-generation Echo Dot around, so you won’t need to spend that extra money if the LED display doesn’t interest you.
