Mobile gaming live streaming may have just taken a big step forward
Historically, if you wanted to stream your mobile gaming experiences from your Android devices, your options weren’t particularly great. However, it looks like the darkhorse streaming app Stre.am might be moving in to take advantage of this unclaimed territory, as they’ve officially rolled out the capability to live stream mobile video games directly from Android devices without any external services.
As it stands, the app is currently pretty chock-full with live-streamers interacting with audiences and talking about their everyday lives. However, if this new capability takes off and finds a home among the Android community, we might be looking at an early version of the next Twitch. The goal of Stre.am is to remain platform-agnostic, which lets users binge streaming content from basically any operating system available. The service is still relatively small on the Android operating system, sporting only 3,500 downloads at the time of writing, but across all platforms it has over 100,000 downloads and remains one of the highest rated services in that bracket.
So what does Stre.am have up their sleeve to make them competitive? Latency, for one thing. Right now, Stre.am’s primary competitor in the mobile streaming sphere, Kamcord, has a about a 40 second delay on all mobile streaming. That’s a pretty significant lag when we’re talking about a service that has users and audiences interacting directly in real time. Twitch, the comparable service for PC gaming, is sitting pretty with a 10 second delay, which is pretty schnazzy. Stre.am, however, can boast about a maintaining just a 2 second delay.
Again, it’s yet to be seen if this will take off. Ultimately, streaming services are dependent on their userbase – not their speed – when it comes to making a name for themselves in a particular niche. However it does seem like Stre.am may just be the app to finally make mobile gaming conveniently streamable.
