Android 15 source code hits AOSP, stable rollout still a few weeks away

New Pixel devices typically arrive with the latest version of Android. However, Google launched this year’s Pixel 9 series earlier than expected, and the devices shipped with last year’s OS version. If you’ve been eagerly waiting for the Android 15 update, you’ll be glad to know that Google has uploaded its source code to AOSP today, and you may be able to try it out using a custom ROM in the next few days.

We received information about Google’s plans to release the Android 15 source code to AOSP last week. As expected, the company has now officially announced that it’s making the source code available at the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). Google has also said that the stable Android 15 update for its Pixel devices will roll out in the next few weeks, but previous reports suggest that it may not arrive until mid-October. Given that the company hasn’t shared a definite release timeline, you shouldn’t expect the update to land on your Pixel anytime soon.

Custom ROM enthusiasts, on the other hand, won’t need to wait too long to experience Android 15. Independent platform developers typically release custom ROMs based on the latest Android release a few days after Google uploads the source code to AOSP. Thanks to this, those of you who have a development-friendly device should get the chance to try Android 15 before Google rolls it out for its Pixel devices. The source code will also allow companies that are not part of Google’s Android Partners program to build modified versions of Android 15 for their devices.
