Android O launch: watch the live stream right here

Happy Android O Day!

Not only is today an exciting one because we get to see a solar eclipse for the first time in almost one hundred years, Google is also officially launching Android O today.

Instead of revealing the next version of Android in a blog post like it usually does, Google is live streaming the big event from New York City to celebrate the solar eclipse. The event will take place at 2:40 pm EDT / 1:40 pm CDT / 11:40 am PDT. You can watch the live stream below:

It’s a bigger event than normal. Things are a little different this year. Google normally reveals the next Android version name a few months before the stable version rolls out to everyone. For instance, we knew Android 7.0 would be called Nougat about two months before it started rolling out to devices. This year, however, Google has been remaining pretty tight-lipped on what this next version will be called.

Oreo? Oatmeal cookie? Orange sherbet? It could be anything at this point, but I’m just saying that the moon passing over the sun reminds me of that chocolatey cookie from Nabisco we all know and love.

We’re getting more than the Android O name. Not only will we get the official Android O name, we’ll also get details on when the final version will roll out to Pixel and Nexus devices. We’re expecting it to start rolling out today, though it might take a few weeks to make it’s way to all devices.

And yes, we’ll probably see the brand new Android O statue today too. Hopefully it’s a little more interesting than a bugdroid standing on a pile of Nougat.
