The best upcoming Android phones in 2024 and beyond

With 2023 behind us, it’s time to start looking ahead. Don’t get us wrong, we’re still enjoying top Android flagships like the Google Pixel 8 and Samsung Galaxy S24 series, but it’s kind of our job to wonder about what’s coming down the pipeline. Let’s get into the hottest upcoming Android devices — the ones that we know are coming later in 2024, as well as the ones we hope to see.

Newest Android phones in 2024

If you don’t plan on waiting, great phones are constantly launching. It’s important to know what’s already out, so here is a short list of the latest devices to hit the market.

• Samsung Galaxy S24 series ($1419.99 at Amazon): Samsung starts every year with a blast, and 2024 was no exception. The company released the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 Plus, and Galaxy S24 Ultra. All come with great high-end specs, superb cameras, gorgeous designs, and an overall fantastic experience.
• Google Pixel 8 series ($699 at Amazon): Just as expected, Google launched its Pixel 8 handsets on October 4, 2023. These offer refinement and incremental improvements. Of course, you get impressive cameras, excellent performance, and a gorgeous design. You can always go with the Pixel 8 Pro if you want more.
• ASUS ROG Phone 8 series ($985 at Amazon): If you want one of the best gaming phones, the ASUS ROG Phone 8 will definitely be one of the best choices. It has the best possible specs, impressive cooling, a gorgeous display, and software gaming optimizations.
• Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 ($1799.99 at Samsung): This is Samsung’s latest high-end foldable phone. It features an improved hinge, top-of-the-line performance, and a great overall experience. It’s also costly, though.
• Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 ($999.99 at Samsung): Those who prefer the flip-phone style will love the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. Aside from the high-end performance and overall great experience, it now has a much larger external display.
• OnePlus Open ($1699.99 at Amazon): In a world where high-end foldables cost $1800, it’s nice to see OnePlus releasing the Open for $1,700. That’s still pricey, but things are improving, and this phone is fantastic. You get potent specs, an excellent design, high-speed 67W charging, and gorgeous displays.
• OnePlus 12 ($899.99 at Amazon): The OnePlus 12 is looking like the best phone the company has released in years. It comes with high-end specs, a great design, and what seems to be a no-compromises experience. It even features 80W-100W charging, as well as 50W wireless charging. The price reflects this at $1,000, though.
• Nothing Phone 2a (£319.99 at Amazon): The Nothing Phone 2a is a budget phone. This is the first time the company ventures into truly budget territory. For $349, it is actually a pretty awesome phone. Its highlights include a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, a MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro processor, 8-12GB of RAM, and a 5,000mAh battery with 45W charging. The design is also gorgeous.
• Samsung Galaxy A55 ($387 at Amazon): While it’s not coming to the USA, the Samsung Galaxy A55 is a great mid-ranger for those who want a quality handset at a more reasonable price point. Specs include an Exynos 1480, 8-12GB of RAM, a 6.6-inch Super AMOLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, and a 5,000mAh battery. It’s a great deal if it’s available where you live.
• ASUS Zenfone 11 Ultra ($899.99 at Amazon): We liked the ASUS Zenfone 11 Ultra quite a bit. It is much like the ASUS ROG Phone 8 Pro, but with a less gamey focus. It is designed very nicely, offers interesting AI features, and the software is very clean. Not to mention, the specs are nothing short of high-end. It also has a large 5,500mAh battery that can charge at a speedy 65W.
• OPPO Find X7 Ultra ($979 at Giztop): The OPPO Find X7 Ultra is among the best phones around, but it doesn’t get much attention because it is only available in China. That said, we were impressed by its performance, design, build quality, and super fast charging. It can charge at 100W wired and 50W wireless.

Android phones coming later in 2024 and in 2025

If you’re not in as much of a rush to upgrade your phone, it might be a good idea to wait until later in 2024. After all, we just saw updates to Google’s Pixel line and Samsung’s flagship phones, so it’ll be a while before they’re ready for another bump. Here are the Android phones you’ll have to wait for:

• Google Pixel 9: The Pixel 8 series is still great, but it’s not too early to start looking ahead. Google’s flagships usually arrive around October, though we should expect a mid-range Pixel 8a before then.
• Google Pixel Fold 2: You didn’t think Google would be done with one foldable, right? Rumors suggest a Pixel Fold 2 is coming, and will likely launch alongside the Pixel 9 series. Details are a bit scarce, but the design seems to be very similar, according to leaks. The displays should be a bit larger, and of course, there will be internal upgrades. More interestingly, there are also early murmurs of Google working on a flip-style foldable.
• Samsung Galaxy S25: Samsung always kicks off the year with its flagship devices, and we expect to see the Galaxy S25 series sometime in Q1 2025. While not much is yet known, we expect to see a Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, new cameras, faster storage, and increased display size.
• Motorola Razr (2024) and Razr Plus (2024): Motorola jumped back into the flip phone race in a big way in 2023, launching not one but two Razr models. If it follows the same schedule in 2024, the premium Razr Plus might arrive in June, with the more affordable Razr coming a few months later.
• Motorola Edge Plus (2024): Although unknown, Motorola has high-end devices, and the Motorola Edge Plus line-up seems to be continuing in 2024. Rumors say this device could launch as soon as April. It’s said to come with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 or 8s Gen 3 chip.
• Sony Xperia 1 VI: Sony’s premium camera phone is another spring-to-early-summer arrival, suggesting we might see it by June.
• Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6: Like the Pixel 8 series, it feels like we just saw new updates to Samsung’s foldable offerings. However, we’re pretty certain the annual updates will continue, which would point to an August or early September launch.
• OnePlus 13: OnePlus tends to release its flagship devices around December in China, followed by a global release early in the following year. We expect the same with the OnePlus 13. Rumors suggest a brand-new design, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset, and a similar camera system as the current flagship.

We’re almost certain that we’ll see all of the phones listed above, but it is by no means an exhaustive list. There are likely many others in store. If we omitted an Android phone that you’re looking forward to, it’s probably only because we don’t know enough about it yet.
