Apple is working on an iPad-based stay-at-home Pixel Tablet rival: Report
- Apple is reportedly working on an iPad-based smart display that can be mounted on walls or other things using magnetic fasteners.
- The device is expected to be smaller and cheaper than an iPad.
Rumors of Apple making a smart display began all the way back in 2021. Now a new report gives us more concrete details about the alleged device. According to information obtained by Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, a trusted Apple insider, the Cupertino company is building a device similar to an iPad, only cheaper and aimed at home use.
The alleged Apple smart display would use a magnetic mounting system for mounting on walls or elsewhere. It’s unclear if the device would also dock onto a speaker or a charging station, or a mixture of both to compete with the likes of the Nest Hub or Echo Show.
The report goes on to say that the device is mainly meant for FaceTime calls and controlling other smart home devices. Sounds like it could be Matter enabled, like Apple’s latest HomePod.
It also sounds an awful lot like Google’s upcoming Pixel Tablet, that’s also meant to be a stay-at-home device. Sources told Gurman that there’s also talk at Apple about larger smart displays down the line. However, the company is not expected to launch any of them until early next year or even later.
An Apple TV refresh could also be on the cards, as per Gurman. The new streaming box could land in the first half of 2024 with a faster processor.
