TL;DR
  • Apple’s unveiling of the iPhone Duo seemingly generated massive consumer curiosity in foldables, making the foldable form factor mainstream.
  • Samsung says that active Google searches for Samsung foldables jumped 300% over the last four weeks (aligning with the iPhone Duo launch), while demand for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 rose 16% since launch.
  • iPhone Duo’s premium pricing could have persuaded fence-sitters to explore Samsung’s mature foldable ecosystem.

Apple’s long-awaited jump into foldable phones might just be the best marketing gift Samsung could have ever asked for. Following Apple’s unveiling of the iPhone Duo, consumer curiosity around foldables has exploded, driving an eye-watering 300% surge in active searches for Samsung foldables. For Samsung, which had already seen resilient demand for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 earlier this cycle, the sudden wave of consumer attention proves that Apple’s entry is validating the entire product category.

According to a Forbes report, Samsung executives confirmed that customer interest has jumped significantly over the past month. Samsung UK’s Corporate Vice President, Mr. Richard Chang, noted that demand for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 family has increased by roughly 16% since launch, while active Google search traffic for Samsung’s foldable lineup jumped by 300% over the last four weeks alone.

“Customer demand for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 family has increased 16% since launch, and with a 300% increase in active Google searches for Samsung foldables in the last month alone, our market leadership is stronger than ever.” – Mr. Richard Chang, Corporate Vice President, Samsung UK.

That dramatic surge directly aligns with Apple’s iPhone Duo launch, suggesting that while millions of shoppers tuned in to see what Apple built, a huge chunk of them immediately opened a second tab to see how Android (and more specifically, Samsung) foldables compared.

The reasons behind the spike in cross-ecosystem interest aren’t hard to imagine. When I spent time with the iPhone Duo, the industrial design impressed me, and I predicted that it would pull the broader market along as more customers and brands warm up to the idea of a wide foldable, and by extension, a foldable.

However, Apple’s first foldable carries an eye-watering premium price tag and equally astronomical out-of-warranty repair costs, and how well iOS handles the foldable experience remains to be seen once consumers get their hands on the foldable for daily use — so it’s not a straightforward sell.

Samsung, by contrast, has spent nearly a decade ironing out the kinks. As we noted in our Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 review, Samsung’s book-style wide-foldable flagship benefits from years of chassis and hinge refinements, as well as One UI multitasking tools like DeX and multi-window apps.

For buyers who sat on the fence waiting for foldables to “become viable,” Apple’s stamp of approval made the form factor safe to consider, but Samsung’s polish and pricing make the Galaxy Z Fold 8 substantially easier to pull the trigger on.

Hopefully, this spike in online curiosity translates into sales for Samsung in the long term. For now, Samsung’s head start is proving a massive advantage: Apple has finally validated the form factor for mainstream buyers, and Samsung is happily cashing in on its decade-long investment in the tech.
