When you buy a new phone, the least you expect to find in the box is a charging cable, a power adapter, and maybe a pair of earphones. Sadly, Apple might do away with at least two of those three main smartphone accessories when it launches the iPhone 12 series.
According to famed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (via MacRumors), Apple will remove the power adapter and EarPods from the box of the iPhone 12 and force you to buy a new 20W charging adapter separately. The Cupertino giant will also reportedly end production of the $30 18W USB-C adapter it sells separately and the 5W adapter it has bundled with iPhones for ages.
Why is Apple removing the power adapter from the box?
Kuo’s theory is that removing the adapter and earphones from the box will help Apple keep the prices of the iPhone 12 lineup at bay. He says that the inclusion of 5G has already made the new models very expensive to produce. The removal of the power adapter and EarPods is one way to avoid passing down high production costs to consumers. Thankfully, analysts at Barclays still expect Apple to bundle a Lightning to USB-C cable in the box.
So when you pay $1,000 or more for a new iPhone 12, you’ll most likely have to shell out extra cash just so you can charge your phone. That might sound pretty ridiculous but maybe Apple is banking on iPhone 12 buyers having an older charger sitting around somewhere. Still, with brands like OnePlus and Xiaomi bundling fast charging adapters with their flagships, Apple’s deal feels like a glass-half-empty sort of situation.
