The best random chat and Chatroulette apps for Android
Chatroulette is one of the most popular random chat websites on the Internet. It’s a fairly simple premise. You match with other people and have a chat. There are a bunch of apps that do this, believe it or not. Random chat apps exist all over the Internet. Random chats are fun. You can talk to strangers about various topics and build your conversation skills. Here are the best random chat apps and Chatroulette apps for Android.
The best random chat and Chatroulette apps for Android
BlahTherapy
Price: Free / Varies
BlahTherapy is a random chat app with a few different options. The base random chat pairs you up with another random person and you chat it up over text. It’s entirely anonymous and you can talk about whatever. There is also a therapist option (for a fee) where you can talk to someone about your problems along with a silly psychic reader option that also comes with a fee. The random chat is fine and the therapist option is quite nice if you’re dealing with a crisis.
Chatous
Price: Free with in-app purchases
Chatous is one of the most popular apps for random video chats. It works a lot like Chatroulette where you and another person match up on a video call and talk stuff out. The app is reasonably clean and it’s a bit more complex than Chatroulette. For instance, you can add hashtags to pair up with people who use the same hashtag. It helps keep away the nasty people. The biggest con with this one is the same problem that all Chatroulette apps have. There are a lot of people who are only looking for sexual encounters and it can ruin the experience.
Chatroulette
Price: Free
The classic Chatroulette service doesn’t have an official app. However, it actually works pretty well on your mobile browser. Simply navigate to the website on your phone, give your browser permission to use your mic and camera, and off you go. It works basically the same on mobile except everything is in portrait mode instead of landscape mode. That includes all of the pros along with all of the cons. We hope it gets an official app eventually, but for now the website suffices.
Discord
Price: Free / $4.99-$9.99 per month
Discord is an excellent place to meet and chat with strangers. It’s a chat room style app with tons of servers. It originally evolved as a gamer platform. However, you can find servers for cooking, dating, gaming, entertainment, and just general chit chat about most topics. You can Google search for Discord servers and the site has a pretty big list of open servers you can join at any time. This one does have video chat, but the vast majority of it is text chatting.
ICQ
Price: Free
ICQ is one of the last old chat room platforms left on the Internet. It works like all the old chats did. People can join random chat rooms and talk to strangers on the Internet. The app features text, voice, and video calls along with little extras like stickers, bots, and more. It doesn’t have the random drop-in feel of Omegle or Chatroulette, but it’s effective at finding people to talk to when you’re bored.
Omega
Price: Free with in-app purchase
Omega works very similarly to Chatroulette. You open the app, enable the camera, and pop into a random one-on-one chat with other people. The app utilizes video chats as well as text chats so you can chat in a way that’s comfortable for you. There are also region filters, gifts, and other stuff to keep things interesting. The platform boasts a gender filter, but we don’t recommend using it. This is a good one to meet and chat with people.
Omegle
Price: Free
The classic Omegle is 100% usable on mobile through a web browser. Simply head to the website and start chatting the way you would on desktop. It supports both text and video chats along with some interesting modes to keep things interesting. It has an section without moderation and we recommend treading carefully in that part of the site. You can also do things like post questions that two strangers can answer to start a conversation. It’s the same as it always was and it works.
Telegram
Price: Free
Telegram is a bit of a wildcard on this list. It’s not a random chat app and it’s not really a chat room app either, although it supports functionality for chat rooms. However, there are Telegram bots you can add to it that matches you with random people to start a conversation. This requires a bit of setup. However, Telegram is wonderful for this because it’s encrypted and generally safer than a lot of other options.
Tinder
Price: Free / $19.99-$29.99 per month
Tinder is mostly for things like dating, but it does have a similar premise to Chatroulette and similar apps. You get a stack of regular people, match with them, and then chat with them through the app. Most people eventually take the chat portion off of the app and onto another service for ease of use. Still, this is a good way to meet random people in your area and you can totally search on there for just friends and not for your next hook up. Of course, most people are on there for hook ups so it may take a bit, but it does work for this sort of thing.
Wusoup
Price: Free
Wusoup is a neat concept. It is a random chat app similar to Omegle. However, this one integrates a karma system similar to Reddit. If you are inappropriate or unpleasant, people downvote you. This makes you less likely to match with people until you eventually get banned for bad behavior. This sort of community policing mixed with anonymous chatting keeps people honest or they don’t get to hang out. This one is also only on a website, but it does work with mobile browsers.
