Google Calendar may soon realize not every new event needs the same default length
Oct 2, 2026 — 1:25 PM ET

- Google Calendar currently allows users to change the default length for new events.
- Right now, this setting impacts all calendars under your account.
- Google appears to be prepping a change that could instead set separate defaults for each calendar.
If your online life runs through Google’s ecosystem, odds are good you take advantage of Google Calendar to organize your schedule. While Calendar’s been around for years and is already packed with features, Google’s never quite done delivering some new improvements, and today we’re taking an early look at what could be one of the next upgrades to arrive.

Getting a new event on our calendars begins with first actually creating the event, followed by immediately editing all the fields: title, location, all that jazz. And setting those details often includes changing the duration of the event.
You may not even realize this, but Google Calendar already gives you the ability to speed that process up a little by changing the default event length. If you usually schedule a lot of quick 15-minute meetings, you can choose that as the default length for new events, or set it to an hour or more, if that’s your preference. Google even syncs your choice across devices and platforms.
But looking through version 2026.38.0-989268529-release of Calendar for Android, we’ve spotted Google preparing a slightly different way to manage that choice. Instead of the app providing a global setting for default event length, Google looks like it’s getting ready to instead move this option to the settings for individual calendars:
That actually makes a lot of sense. If you’re juggling multiple calendars, maybe you have a lot of short meetings on your business calendar, but your personal calendar is usually populated with longer events for your kids. With this change, each different calendar can anticipate events of different lengths.
If Google actually does end up pushing this change live, it looks like this per-calendar solution would be the only way to set default event lengths going forward, and we’d lose the global option in the process.
