Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will be revealed on August 26
- Activision has officially unveiled Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.
- The first-person shooter is based on historical claims the USSR infiltrated Western intelligence.
- A full reveal is coming on August 26.
The leaks and rumors were true — Activision has teased the next Call of Duty game, and it’s another Black Ops title (with a slight twist).
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will be revealed in full on August 26, but a preview clip lays the groundwork for a potentially intriguing story. It’s based on KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov’s claims the Soviet Union relied on decades-long “active measures” to subvert countries, and that a spy codenamed Perseus had infiltrated Western intelligence as part of this plan.
This will be the first Call of Duty game made for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. It’s also coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Activision hasn’t committed to a release date yet, but a Doritos slip-up suggested Cold War might arrive in October for current-generation systems. The Series X won’t arrive until November, and there are no guarantees the PS5 will be ready before then.
Veteran studios Treyarch and Raven are attached to the game. There has been some drama attached to the game. Kotaku claimed that Treyarch took the lead after Raven and Sledgehammer “argued frequently” over the production.

The announcement is unusually late for a Call of Duty game. Activision typically announces closer to spring, not late summer. It’s not certain how much the pandemic played a part, but it also comes when Cold War is expected to be an early showcase for the PS5 and Xbox Series X. There’s a lot riding on this release, and Activision may want the game to be as polished as possible before showing it to the public.
