Your next phone might have a color-changing leather back
- Infinix has announced a color-changing faux leather back for smartphones.
- The back changes color when exposed to sunlight.
- There’s no word on when we’ll see the first devices with this tech.
Smartphones with color-changing backs seem to be the new trend in 2022, as both Vivo and Realme launched phones that changed colors when exposed to sunlight. This is limited to plastic or glass backs right now, but fellow smartphone brand Infinix has a new trick up its sleeve.
The Transsion-owned smartphone company has announced a color-changing faux leather back. Much like realme and vivo’s efforts, the rear cover changes when exposed to UV or sunlight. Of course, the faux leather cover reverts to its original color when you bring it inside again.
Infinix says it uses “photochromic polymers” in the leather back to enable these color changes, adding that it doesn’t require additional power from the smartphone. The company also notes that you can create custom patterns on the back cover by using stencils, although this seems like a very temporary pattern given the color-changing nature.
The company says the color-changing leather back will be available on future devices, although it didn’t give a timeline for these phones to be released. Nevertheless, we always appreciate a leather back, so we’re glad to see companies continuing to embrace the material.
