How to change and create your own voices on Waze
Waze is a GPS-based navigation app that gets the community involved. It allows anyone using the app to report traffic conditions, accidents, and other incidents, and even lets you pinpoint speed traps to help other drivers avoid them. Waze, like other navigation apps, comes with a guiding voice to assist during the drive. If you’re getting tired of listening to the same Waze voice every day, this is for you. Here’s how to change and create your own Waze voices!
How to change Waze voices
- Open the Waze app.
- Tap on the speaker icon at the bottom right corner.
- Tap on Waze Voice.
- You will now see a list of available voices that you can change to.
- Select the one you prefer.
- You can choose between various voices in different languages.
- If you want the voice to read street names, only select the options that say “Including street names.”
Apart from the default voices available, Waze often adds celebrity voices to the list. These are usually done to promote movies, TV shows, or upcoming music, and are available for a limited time. Everyone from Kevin Hart to DJ Khaled has been around to help with navigation. Keep an eye out for these promotional announcements, as they don’t stick around for long.
How to create your own voices
Don’t care for the sometimes robotic monotony of the default navigation Waze voices? Add your spin to things by recording the voice of a friend, family member, or significant other. Of course, you could always record yourself as well if you really want to hear that all the time.
- Open the Waze app.
- Tap on the speaker icon at the bottom right corner.
- Open Waze Voice.
- Tap on Record new voice (at the top of the page).
- A complete list of phrases will appear.
- Tap on a phrase, to begin recording.
- Tap on the large record button, say the phrase, and tap on the stop button.
- You can tap on the Play button to check the recording.
- Then tap on Save.
- Once all the phrases are recorded, tap on Done (in the upper right corner).
If a phrase hasn’t been recorded, it will go back to the default voice. Keep in mind that there are also time limits set for each phrase, so you can’t get too crazy with what is being said. As a safety warning will remind you, these recordings are used to guide you, so making them accurate is important. Creativity is great, but not at the cost of safety.
