You told us: You prefer the Dimensity 9000 (!) over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1
Qualcomm and MediaTek have revealed their flagship processors for 2022, and they both look like premium propositions. From 4nm designs and Cortex-X2 power to capable graphics silicon and great camera smarts, they both seem impressive on paper.
Which one would Android Authority readers choose though? That’s what we asked a few days ago, and here’s how you voted.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Dimensity 9000?
Results
Over 1,500 votes were cast after we posted the poll in our Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 versus Dimensity 9000 specs comparison over the weekend. It was a relatively close affair, but it turns out that ~54% of respondents gave the nod to the MediaTek Dimensity 9000.
Some reader comments supporting this position say MediaTek’s chipset has better specs on paper. There’s some merit to this too, as the Dimensity processor is built on TSMC’s 4nm process (expected to be better than Samsung’s 4nm process), while also supporting AV1 decoding, a newer RAM standard, and Bluetooth 5.3.
Meanwhile, almost 46% of polled readers say they prefer the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. Reader comments point to MediaTek’s lack of support for mmWave 5G, poorer GPU support for emulators, and reputation for less-than-ideal custom ROM support.
Either way, this is a pretty interesting poll result given that enthusiasts have traditionally stuck with Qualcomm over the years. It’s too early to tell whether MediaTek is now a major threat to Qualcomm in the premium flagship space, but we can’t wait for 2022 to find out.

- androwin: Since in my country we don’t use mmwave (only sub-6ghz part of 5G) I’ll benefit more from AV1 decoding and newer bluetooth version 5.3, not to mention higher cpu clocks of the mid-cores, faster RAM, cheaper and usually cooler cpu than Snapdragon which translates to better battery life. Yep, Dimensity 9000 is the right choice for me.
- Miku Ivalice: I mean you get pretty identical performance with Dimensity being significantly cheaper even with its recent price increase. Dimensity 9000 on paper with its price just seems like the no-brainer winner. But I’ll probably stick with Qualcomm being North American n all. Plus better compatibility with emulators for those with emulating interests. Not ready to switch to MediaTek just quite yet because of Gamecube/PS2/Switch emulation. But maybe in 2024 when I’m ready for an upgrade, I’ll be eyeballing MediaTek.
- jared Diaz: No one would mention that TSMC 4NM is way better than Samsung 4NM?
- Hergie Paguio Labargan: Regardless of the price difference I would still choose Snapdragon due to strong custom rom support… Imagine my old 2017 SD821 phone is still running smooth with android 11 custom rom… MediaTek is known for almost no custom rom support at all…
- Tommy Crosby: The arrival of the 9000 took me by surprise, I would never expected MediaTek to actually deliver a flagship SoC first and still have better specs “on paper” next to a Snapdragon announcement. But all in all, specs between comparable SoCs doesn’t matter at all, the real question is how it will operate in daily use for battery and heat, how well will it be supported (especially on long term updates for Android) and what phone makers will do with that SoC (is the cheaper SoC price advantage will be gobled for profits or used to make cheaper phones or having better features at the same price).
- Kira: If there is a marked difference between prices of both SoCs then MediaTek(and consumers) win. After all, the most hyped features of both these chipsets won’t matter to most users, but their pricing certainly will. So,I would say advantage MediaTek at this point of time.
