DJI Osmo Mobile 6 promises smooth smartphone video for a lot of money
- The DJI Osmo Mobile 6 just landed, making it the new flagship smartphone gimbal from the brand.
- It features some subtle upgrades over last year’s DJI OM 5.
- Unfortunately, it also features the same price as the OM 5, which is $159.
Last year, DJI launched the OM 5, which was its then-newest smartphone gimbal. In our review, we praised it as probably the best smartphone gimbal on the market, but also criticized it as being way too expensive.
Today, DJI is launching the follow-up: the DJI Osmo Mobile 6. We’re not sure why DJI is going back to “Osmo Mobile” instead of “OM,” and we’re also not sure why the company decided to make the Osmo Mobile 6 just as expensive as the OM 5.
Regardless, the Osmo Mobile 6 seems like a terrific gimbal. It has the same foldable form factor as the OM 5 with a new dark gray color that makes it look more professional. It’s been re-engineered to be slightly more compact while simultaneously being able to handle larger/heavier phones.
However, only three features are truly new with the DJI Osmo Mobile 6. The first is an iPhone exclusive, unfortunately, which is called Quick Launch. This lets you snap your iPhone into the clamp and automatically launch the DJI Mimo app. We assume this has to do with MagSafe connections, although DJI doesn’t elaborate on that. Regardless, this won’t work for Android phones. The second new feature is a built-in status panel, which can give you battery levels and tell you which gimbal mode you’re using with just a glance. The third new feature is a Side Wheel, which allows you to manually control focus and zoom.
These new features seem cool, but will they be enough to justify the price? At $159, the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 is just as expensive as the OM 5, which makes it one of the most expensive consumer-level smartphone gimbals on the market. Time will tell if buyers accept this or not.
