Use Edge Sense Plus to customize Active Edge on your Pixel 3
- Edge Sense Plus is an Active Edge customization module which previously worked on the Pixel and Pixel 2.
- Now, Edge Sense Plus also works on the Google Pixel 3 and Google Pixel 3 XL.
- However, to use the software you’ll need to unlock your bootloader, gain root, and use Magisk.
If you squeeze the sides of your Google Pixel 3 or Google Pixel 3 XL, you can easily bring up Google Assistant. However, aside from a few other basic functions, that’s about all you can do.
With the Edge Sense Plus app though, you can do so much more, and now it’s available for the Pixel 3 line.
Edge Sense Plus gives you the freedom to control what one squeeze, a long squeeze, or a double squeeze does with practically limitless options. The app is inspired by HTC’s Edge Sense — the inspiration behind Google’s Active Edge — which gives you a lot of control out of the box.
Unfortunately, Google keeps Active Edge much more locked down than HTC, so you’re going to have to jump through some hoops to get Edge Sense Plus to install.
First, you need to unlock your Pixel 3 bootloader. Luckily, we have a handy walkthrough of that process here.
Next, you’ll need to gain root access. We don’t have a walkthrough for that, but the instructions at XDA Developers are easy enough to follow.
Finally, you’ll need to install Magisk and install and enable the Edge Sense Plus module. Once done, you’ll be able to fully customize Active Edge to your liking.
If this is too technical for you, unfortunately, you’re going to likely be stuck with Google’s locked-down Active Edge for the time being, as without root access you can’t control anything about Active Edge.
If you’d like to know more about what Edge Sense Plus can do, check out our hands-on with the app on the HTC U11. It’s on an HTCdevice, but the app is pretty much the same.
