TL;DR
  • Essential has released another upgrade to its camera app.
  • The upgrade includes a selfie flash, stability fixes, and a tiny planet mode in beta.
  • Tiny Planets produces entire 360-degree photos in a flat image, but this iteration of it requires Essential’s 360 Camera accessory.

Essential has just announced the latest update to the Essential Phone camera app and it is bringing a selfie flash, stability fixes, and a beta version of a ‘Tiny Planet’ mode.

Tiny Planet is a feature we’ve seen before in Android apps and lets users take 360-degree photos and videos, which it displays as if on its own planet (see the effect in the tweet below).

Get your selfie look ready. We just released an update to Essential Camera app that adds flash for the selfie camera, Tiny Planet mode (beta) for 360° photos and videos, and stability fixes. Download it now: https://t.co/zXoZ765GHF pic.twitter.com/TJpTMUtFVv

The main downside is that to take these photos with your phone, you will need to have an Essential 360 Camera accessory. However, it may result in better-looking shots than those based on the panorama stitching that the third-party apps use.

The selfie flash will also likely get a fair amount of use from many users. It works by turning the screen bright white as the selfie is taken in order to illuminate the faces of the people in the picture.

This camera update is the latest in a long line of updates as Essential try to improve the quality of its phone’s camera. This comes after its camera was criticized upon release with our reviewers feeling that the first version of the app suffered from poor processing and slow speeds.

Previous updates have included features such as Auto-HDR, stability fixes, and boosted capture speeds.

While the latest update may not improve the quality of regular photos as much as previous updates, it still shows Essential’s commitment to improving its device. In fact, this is even more impressive considering the last update brought considerable photo quality upgrades and was only released three weeks ago.
