This Fitbit Edge upgrade takes it one step closer to buy-it-for-life status

Google has just announced the new Fitbit Edge fitness tracker, with dimensions identical to the brand’s previous narrow-screen options. This is Google’s first narrow-screen tracker since the Fitbit Charge 6 launched in 2023, and is positioned between the screenless Fitbit Air and the Pixel Watch.

Despite its (relatively) compact size, the Fitbit Edge borrows several features from the Pixel Watch, including mirroring of notifications and step-by-step directions from Google Maps. It also carries forward hardware-based features from previous Fitbit trackers, including ECG, skin temperature, SpO2, and more.

Along with these, the Fitbit Air also gets a new trait that has been missing from previous models, and that is repairability. According to Google, the Fitbit Edge is the first Fitbit tracker that is repairable. Previously, Google declined repair requests for Fitbits and only allowed consumers to file claims for devices covered under warranty. Such customers usually receive a new device for their claims.

However, this also frustrates users whose devices are no longer under warranty. By making the Fitbit Edge repairable, Google is addressing that.

However, repair options remain limited. Unlike the Pixel Watch 4 and newer, which allow replacement of both the battery and screen, the Fitbit Edge supports only battery replacement. Additionally, Google hasn’t specified plans to offer self-repair kits or share guides to do so. We’ll keep you posted on that front.

The pre-orders for the Fitbit Edge go live today, and the tracker will be available starting October 27. It’s priced at $179.99, and the special Stephen Curry edition will be $219.99.
