TL;DR
  • Fortnite for Android beta is now available, but not on the Play Store.
  • There is no Fortnite Google Play Store listing because Epic Games is bypassing the world’s largest app store.
  • In response, Google has a new warning on the Play Store letting gamers know that Fortnite is not available.

Epic Games is releasing the mega-popular Fortnite for Android in an unconventional way: it is bypassing the Google Play Store. The beta version of the battle royale game is live now for Samsung flagship owners, and will likely see a wider release next week.

Since the game will not be available on the Play Store, Google is now warning gamers who search for the title that they won’t find Fortnite anywhere in the shop. This is likely to deter developers from creating apps with the word “Fortnite” in the title to take advantage of the confusion over the release.

The warning appears if you search for Fortnite in the Play Store on an Android device:

The warning does not appear if you search for Fortnite on the desktop version of the Play Store. This is likely because you can’t install apps from the Play Store on your computer, so there’s no fear of you downloading something you didn’t mean to.

Samsung’s exclusive rights to the Fortnite for Android beta will expire on August 13, after which the beta will open to dozens of more Android devices. After that, the beta will open to a handful more. We can only assume that when the game leaves beta, it will be available to any Android device that can handle it.

However, to get the game you will have to install it from a third-party source, which is a bit more complicated than just visiting the Google Play Store. Check out our guide below to see how to install Fortnite for Android.
