Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are officially taken off life support

The Galaxy S6 and its curved sibling will no longer receive major OS updates or monthly security patches. The Galaxy S6 Edge Plus and Galaxy S6 Active are expected to follow suit.

To this day, the Galaxy S6 Edge remains one of my favorite devices: it felt revolutionary at the time in various ways. Starting with the Galaxy S6 duo in 2015, Samsung finally ditched its drab plastic look and adopted premium materials like aluminum and glass. The Galaxy S6 series was a particularly exciting iteration of Samsung’s flagship not only because of the radical design changes and camera improvements, but also because Samsung introduced for the first time its now-iconic dual-curved design.

Alas, in the world of technology where smartphones’ average life span measures two years, the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are considered very old. Accordingly, Samsung will no longer be rolling out major OS updates or monthly security patches to those devices: they have officially been taken off Samsung’s security update list. In other words, the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge will be stuck on Android Nougat with Google’s February security patch.

One thing to note is that Samsung initially removed the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus and Galaxy S6 Active from the security update list along with the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. The company added them back shortly after; however, considering that these two came out a few months after the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, it would be safe to assume that they will, too, meet their maker soon.
