TL;DR
  • A new report has revealed the storage options for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5.
  • All variants of the Fold 5 may get UFS 4.0 storage.
  • The Flip 5 could also get UFS 4.0 storage, but one variant may not get the upgrade.

When the Samsung Galaxy S23 series launched, it came with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy chip, along with Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 4.0. A new report suggests Samsung’s upcoming foldables may also take advantage of the UFS 4.0 technology, but one version of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 may get left behind.

The folks over at SamMobile claim to have details on the storage options coming to the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5. According to the outlet, the Fold 5 should come with 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB variants. As for the Flip 5, it’s expected Samsung will offer 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB models.

In addition, these phones will supposedly also come with UFS 4.0 storage. This may not come as much of a surprise given that Samsung’s foldables are also expected to use the same or an upgraded version of the S23’s processor. What is a surprise, however, is that there may be one variant that doesn’t get the speedy storage option.

The variant in question could be the 128GB variant of the Flip 5. Being the most cost-effective option among the group, it looks like this phone could end up being stuck with UFS 3.1.

If you’re unfamiliar with UFS 4.0, you can check out our UFS 4.0 article which covers everything you need to know. But essentially it’s a flash storage chip created by Samsung and it’s about twice the speed of UFS 3.1.

If the Flip 5 does end up using UFS 3.1, this would put it in line with the standard model of the Galaxy S23. Although UFS 4.0 is much faster than its predecessors, using UFS 3.1 shouldn’t have much of an impact on the user experience. You’ll probably only notice the difference if you put the Flip 5 and Fold 5 next to each other.
