Garmin unveils the vívoactive 3, vívomove HR, and vívosport activity trackers at IFA 2017

Garmin has a multitude of wearable devices on the market right now, all categorized into different series that are made for athletes with specific needs. The most popular series is the vívo lineup of activity trackers, consisting of devices like the vívosmart HR+, vívomove, vívofit jr., and the vívoactive HR.

Today at IFA 2017, Garmin is adding three new devices to its vívo lineup: the vívoactive 3, vívomove HR, and vívosport.

All three of these devices are made for different users. The vívoactive 3 is a smartwatch that is the first device to feature Garmin Pay, the vívomove HR is a touchscreen hybrid smartwatch, while the vívosport is a slim activity tracker with a color touchscreen display.

There’s a lot to cover here, so let’s get started. Here’s what you need to know about the Garmin vívoactive 3, vívomove HR, and vívosport!

vívoactive 3

What’s perhaps the most exciting of the new devices, the new vívoactive 3 is the followup to the super-popular vívoactive HR from 2016. Aside from the vívoactive name, however, you probably wouldn’t have guessed that these devices are in the same family. While the vívoactive HR looked like a fitness band through and through, the vívoactive 3 looks more in line with the company’s other smart fitness watches like the fenix 5 and Forerunner 935.

We’ll get into the specs and features in a moment, but the biggest news here is that the vívoactive 3 is the first device to feature Garmin Pay, the company’s new contactless payment platform. Garmin Pay supports Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards from a number of major banks, with more being added every day. And, just like Android Pay, Samsung Pay, and Apple Pay, you’ll be able to score the same rewards and benefits with Garmin Pay that you’d normally get when using physical cards.

Okay, now for the watch. The vívoactive 3 comes with an always-on touchscreen Garmin Chroma display, as well as the company’s new Side Swipe controls that will allow you to easily navigate around the watch’s interface without the need for a physical navigation button.

It also comes with all of the other features we’ve come to expect from higher-end Garmin devices. The vívoactive 3 sports a built-in GPS, waterproofing, week-long battery life while in watch mode, and 13-hour battery life when the GPS is enabled. It also comes with a Garmin Elevate heart rate monitor, which will allow you to keep track of things like your VO2 max and fitness age, all-day stress tracking, and more.

The vívoactive 3 will also allow you to receive and respond to text messages and social media notifications, app alerts, calls, emails, and more. This is a pretty big deal, as no other Garmin wearable has allowed users to respond to messages from their wrist.

The vívoactive 3 will be available for a suggested retail price of $299.99 for the black/stainless and white/stainless models, while the black/slate variant will be available for $329.99. There will also be a number of accessory bands available if you’d like to switch up the look a bit. You’ll be able to buy the vívoactive 3 from Garmin’s website, BestBuy.com, and in Best Buy retail stores.

vívomove HR

Now for the most stylish wearable of the bunch, the vívomove HR. A followup to the original vívomove, this new device brings a heart rate sensor (duh) and some more smart features to the popular model Garmin introduced last year.

Hybrid smartwatches have been growing in popularity as of late, but Garmin is really upping the ante with the vívomove HR. This is the first hybrid smartwatch with a touchscreen display from the Kansas-based company.

You may have noticed the small digital display sitting beneath the analog watch hands. This display only appears when you turn your wrist, so there’s no need to worry about it wasting precious battery life when you aren’t looking at it. Speaking of battery life, the vívomove HR will last up to five days in “smart” mode or up to two weeks in watch mode. As an added bonus, the watch hands move away when you’re swiping through your messages.

The vívomove HR supports vibration alerts for emails, texts, phone calls, app alerts, social media updates, and more, as well as the ability to control music on your smartphone.

It’s swim/shower safe, and will track activity metrics such as steps, intensity minutes, sleep, stairs climbed, heart rate, and more, and comes with preloaded sports profiles for walking, running, cardio and strength training. It also features Garmin’s Move IQ technology, which means the device will automatically start and stop when it senses you’ve stopped or started an activity.

The vívomove HR is available in two models: the vívomove HR Sport ($199.99) with a silicone strap and the vívomove HR Premium ($299.99) with a leather strap and full steel body. You’ll also have the choice of three different watch case colors: black, rose gold, and stainless steel and gold.

vívosport

Last but certainly not least, we have the Garmin vívosport. This is the first device in the vívosport lineup, but if you need something to compare it to, think Garmin vívosmart HR+, but better.

The vívosport features an always-on Garmin Chroma color touchscreen display, a built-in GPS, and a Garmin Elevate heart rate sensor which will allow you to track your VO2 max and fitness age. The color display is the real kicker here, though, as Garmin’s other fitness bands don’t normally come with color displays.

It also features built-in sports apps for walking, running, biking, cardio, strength training, and cycling, and will track your stress levels all day.

Of course, this device is waterproof so you’ll be able to wear it in the pool and in the shower. Garmin says the battery will be able to last up to seven days in smartwatch mode and eight hours in GPS mode.

The vívosport will be available in black/slate, black/fuchsia, and black/limelight color options for the suggested retail price of $199.99. The black/limelight option will only be available in a large size, however, while the other two colors will be available in both small/medium and large.
