Garmin Fenix 8 is blazing bright as the sun, even in dark rooms
Oct 8, 2026 — 11:52 AM ET

- Garmin has confirmed a bug causing screen brightness issues on the Fenix 8.
- When moving from a brightly lit environment to a dark area, the display stays at full brightness if Always On Display is enabled and wrist gestures are off.
- A fix is in the works, but there is no timetable for the release.
A new bug is negatively impacting the Garmin Fenix 8. And it’s one of the more annoying types of bug, the kind that drains your battery. If you’re an owner of the Fenix 9 predecessor, then there’s both good and bad news.
Spotted by Gadgets and Wearables, users are reporting an issue with screen brightness on the Fenix 8. According to the reports, the display stays stuck at full brightness when moving from a well-lit area to a darker environment. Although the watch refuses to automatically adjust the brightness, the brightness will reportedly go back to normal after touching the screen or pressing a button.
Fortunately, it appears that this bug only activates if you have a specific setup in place. It requires you to have Always On Display (AOD) enabled and wrist gestures turned off.

Garmin has now acknowledged the glitch and says its engineers are aware of the problem. Here’s where the good and bad news come into play. The good news is that the company says it is working on a fix, and it will be released with the next software update. As for the bad news, Garmin also admits that it has no time frame for this release.
If you are also experiencing this bug, Garmin recommends continuing to use the workaround of touching the screen or pressing a button. The company states that it will post in the forum again when there are additional details to share.
