Gears Pop: Here's everything you need to know (Update: out now!)
First announced at E3 2018, Gears Pop is a cartoony take on the Gears of War series for mobile devices. As the name implies, the game’s characters have been reimagined as Funko Pop figures with cute oversized heads.
This is obviously a major departure from the grit and grime of the main Gears of War games, but this cutesy reimagining does a good job transforming key parts of the series like cover and lancer battles (without the gore) into a mobile-friendly format. What is Gears Pop?
Gears Pop is a real-time arena-style multiplayer game for mobile devices and Windows. It reimagines popular Gears of War characters as Funko Pop style miniatures, replacing over-the-shoulder action with strategic gameplay similar to Clash Royale.
When is the Gears Pop release date?
Gears Pop was released on August 22, 2019. The game soft launched in November of 2018 in Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
Is it free-to-play?
Yes, Gears Pop is free-to-play with in-app purchases.
What do you do in Gears Pop?
Gears Pop plays similarly to Clash Royale and other mobile arena-style games. First you build a squad of eight units (plus an ultimate ability), then you enter into three-minute multiplayer battles. Your goal is to destroy the enemy outposts (turrets) and leader.
You have a power meter that slowly fills up, and each unit has a specific power cost associated with playing it. There are two columns of cover on the battlefield, and capturing cover further up will allow you to play your units closer to the enemy outposts. Ultimate abilities regenerate slowly over time, and are extremely powerful.
What characters are in Gears Pop?
Gears Pop features a number of popular Gears of War characters, including Marcus Fenix, Augustus Cole, Dominic Santiago, Kait Diaz, and others. Generic Gears and Locust Drones also make an appearance, and more characters will be added to the game as time goes on.
Can I unlock Xbox Live Achievements?
Yes! By signing into your Xbox Live account, you can unlock a number of Xbox Live Achievements by playing the game. There are 45 achievements available at launch, and completing them will add to your Xbox Gamerscore.
