TL;DR
  • Google is testing a new Neural Expressive-inspired design for Gemini Live’s audio visualizer.
  • The redesign replaces the familiar pill-shaped visualizer with a circular button surrounded by animated dots and a glowing blue background.
  • The new UI is still in development and has noticeable visual glitches. We don’t know when it might roll out.

Google’s been putting in a lot of effort into making Gemini’s performance feel polished, and its latest test extends that to how Gemini looks — specifically the tool’s conversational Gemini Live assistant. Earlier this month, we gave you an early look at a Gemini Live redesign with a waveform animation and a dedicated button to mute Gemini’s voice responses. However, it now looks like Google could be heading in a different direction.

We’ve just spotted a different Gemini Live redesign, and this one does away with the familiar pill-shaped audio visualizer.

We were able to enable an all-new Neural Expressive design-inspired UI for Gemini Live’s audio visualizer, and it surfaces as a circular button surrounded by animated dots and a glowing blue background. We observed the development in version 17.70.10.ve.arm64 of the Google app.

For reference, we’ve shared our Neural Expressive findings in the past, revealing Google’s work with glowing gradients, animated elements, and an overall cleaner layout for the Gemini app. Our latest discovery appears to be a direct extension of the same design language, only this time it’s tailored for Gemini Live.

The first set of four screenshots above showcases what Gemini Live’s audio visualizer currently looks like across different screens. The second set of four showcases what the potentially upcoming Neural Expressive-inspired interface could look like across those same screens.

The new UI is a work in progress, and its animations aren’t all that perfect just yet. There are some clear visual glitches here, though considering that we had to enable the redesign manually, the rough edges aren’t all that surprising. Here’s a look at the floating bubble being moved around:

The change is evident here. Google seems to be moving away from the static pill-shaped UI to a more animated circular design with glowing elements and surrounding dots that almost appear to warp the space around them, much like a black hole. It’s a striking visual effect, though it certainly still needs polishing.

Elsewhere, the redesign appears to be cosmetic only, with no functional changes spotted.

Note that there’s a possibility that Google doesn’t proceed with this Neural Expressive-inspired design, or that it goes forward with the waveform-based redesign we uncovered earlier this month. Alternatively, it’s also entirely possible Google has something else in mind altogether that we haven’t uncovered yet. We’ll update you when we learn more.

⚠️ An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release.
