  • Google app v17.73.15 reveals that Gemini Live’s upcoming offline mode requires an active internet connection to set up beforehand.
  • Code strings confirm the offline experience will run with “limited features.” This indicates it could lack real-time data and not support web-dependent extensions.
  • Users will be prompted to reconnect to the internet to access Gemini Live’s full capabilities.

Google is laying the groundwork for an offline mode in Gemini Live, but talking to the assistant without an internet connection will come with some notable caveats. New code unearthed in the latest Google app reveals that users will need an active data connection to set up the feature beforehand, and the offline experience itself will offer a reduced set of capabilities.

Google app v17.73.15 includes new strings outlining how Gemini Live’s offline mode will need an internet connection to set up:

Code
<string name="assistant_ui_candybar_offline_mode_set_up">"To keep talking to Gemini, set up offline mode when you're connected to the internet"</string>

As expected, you’ll need to be connected to the internet to set up offline mode. This is similar to how offline mode works in apps like Google Maps and Google Translate, where a pre-emptive download is required before you can use such internet-active apps without an internet connection. It’s not clear what Google will set up on the device in this case — whether it will download an on-device model, or if it will make use of an existing one on the device.

Gemini Live will also inform users that it is running in offline mode “with limited features.” Users will be prompted to connect to the internet for the “full experience.”

Code
<string name="assistant_ui_candybar_offline_mode_active">Gemini Live is in offline mode with limited features. Connect to the internet for the full experience.</string>
<string name="assistant_ui_candybar_offline_mode_available">Turn on offline mode to use Gemini Live with limited features</string>

It’s not clear what features will be limited, but logically speaking, Gemini Live will not be able to fetch real-time information from the internet or access web-dependent extensions.

A functional offline fallback could dramatically improve Gemini Live’s reliability, particularly in spotty coverage zones like flights, subway commutes, or while navigating hands-free on the road with Gemini Live in Android Auto. In such situations, handling device toggles, managing offline media playback, and perhaps answering even basic queries could be enough for a pleasant experience, given the circumstances.

Google hasn’t yet announced or confirmed Gemini Live’s offline mode functionality. We’ll keep you updated when we learn more.

⚠️ An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release.
