Google just closed the gap between Gemini Notebooks and Docs

Gemini in Google Docs has long been a helpful assistant. It can create audio summaries of long documents, make a boring document more interesting with images, charts, and diagrams, and even consistently write in your tone across documents. Now, Google is taking things a step further by giving Gemini in Google Docs access to your Gemini Notebooks to ground its writing in sources you select.

Google announced today that Gemini Notebooks can now be used as a context source in Google Docs. This means you no longer have to manually switch between tabs to cross-verify information in drafts created by Gemini. Once you have your research organized in a Gemini Notebook, you can add it as a source in Docs, and Gemini will draw information from it when writing.

You can type “@” in the Gemini side panel or bottom bar in Docs and select a Gemini Notebook to reference. When writing with a notebook selected as a context source in Docs, Gemini also adds inline citations so you can easily verify facts without switching to a different tab.

I tried asking Gemini to create a YouTube video script using research on the Logitech MX Master 4 mouse that I had organized in Gemini Notebooks back when it was still called NotebookLM. Gemini went through all my sources, pulled the right information, and gave me a script that was ready to shoot.

This feature is now available to users on Google’s Business, Education, and Enterprise plans. It is also available to consumers with a Google AI Pro or Ultra subscription.
