Android 14 on Pixel 8 lets you generate your own wallpapers with AI

This is no Wallpaper Wednesday, but it's a cool feature nonetheless.

TL;DR
  • Google has announced generative AI wallpapers for Pixel devices as part of Android 14.
  • This allows you to make your own wallpapers for the Pixel 8 series.
  • The feature uses predefined options rather than 100% customizable prompts, though.

Generative AI is the hot tech term in 2023, as more companies embrace AI’s improved ability to create text, images, and more. We’ve already seen Google implementing this tech in various ways, and it’s now bringing generative AI wallpapers as part of Android 14.

The company confirmed that the Pixel 8 series will indeed be the first devices to get generative AI wallpapers. It explains that these wallpapers use “AI-generated text-to-image diffusion models” to help you create new backgrounds.

Generative AI wallpapers: How does this work?

Google says users can choose from several preset suggestions to create new wallpapers. A video showing the feature suggests that you can’t actually come up with a 100% original prompt, nor can you come up with a detailed prompt. Instead, it seems like users have a short prompt template and can choose from several options for subjects/objects, colors, and materials.

For example, the default Dreamscape prompt is “A spaceship made of metal in slate.” Users can change “spaceship,” “metal,” and “slate” to one of several predefined options but can’t type their own options or write a longer prompt. Either way, users are presented with several generated wallpapers to choose from.

Google explained its decision to stick with a more limited approach in a statement to Android Authority:

In order to provide a high-quality experience for the generative AI wallpapers, with the help of a design touch, we currently only offer (the) present options.

The firm added that it had nothing to share regarding plans for greater customization.

The company also confirmed to us that this feature uses cloud processing rather than on-device generative AI. So you’ll need an internet connection to generate these backgrounds.

This is still a pretty cool way to quickly create your own wallpaper, joining the company’s emoji wallpaper option released earlier this year. But we hope Google is indeed working on more granular customization options for generative AI wallpapers, or offline functionality.

Generative AI wallpapers are coming to the Pixel 8 series first, and the company didn’t have a timeline to share regarding expanded device availability. Here’s hoping they land in future Pixel Feature Drops and eventually roll out to Android phones from other brands.
