Gmail finally lets you decide what happens when you swipe left or right
- Google updated Gmail with the ability to customize what happens when you swipe right or left on an email.
- You can customize the swipe actions within the app’s settings.

Up until now, the only swipe action you could take on emails from the conversation list was archive. That finally changes today as Gmail now lets you customize what happens when you swipe left or right on an email, reported Android Police.
Once you open the app and go to Settings, you then press General settings. From there, you will notice that the ‘Swipe actions’ checkbox was replaced with a ‘Swipe actions’ menu that opens a separate page.
After that, you will see you can change what happens when you swipe right or left. The available options include Archive, Delete, Mark as read/unread, Move to, Snooze, and None. Once you make your selection, you can go back to the conversation list and swipe to your heart’s content.
Another subtle change is the ‘Gmail notification action’ at the top of the ‘General settings’ page was changed to ‘Default notification action.’
Interestingly, Android Police noted that the ability to customize swipe actions seems to have been present since version 8.4. We had to wait until the latest 8.4.20 release to see the new feature, so it could be that this either a server-side roll-out or something that was already present and we just noticed it now.
Either way, make sure to update the app to the latest version and cross your fingers that you get the feature.
