Google AI Pro upgrades are turning into a costly headache for some students
Oct 26, 2026 — 8:44 AM ET

- Students are reporting unexpected cancellations and refunds after upgrading from free Google AI Plus student plans to discounted AI Pro subscriptions.
- The cancellations are also leaving affected students without their original free benefits, which Google’s existing policy may prevent them from recovering.
- Google One support is reportedly escalating some cases for further verification, but it hasn’t confirmed a fix.
- We’ve contacted Google for comment.
Upgrading to a better Google AI plan should mean getting more features, not losing everything you already had. Yet some students say that’s exactly what happened when they moved from free Google AI Plus subscriptions to discounted AI Pro plans. Google is reportedly canceling these upgrades and issuing refunds without users requesting them, leaving affected students without either subscription and, potentially, no way to recover their original free benefits.
Complaints have surfaced on Reddit and Google’s support forums, with multiple students describing a similar sequence. They signed up for a free 12-month Google AI Plus student offer, accepted a discounted AI Pro upgrade, and subsequently received unexpected cancellation and refund notices. Instead of returning to AI Plus, their accounts reverted to the free tier.
One student reported paying for an AI Pro upgrade on October 14. The checkout reportedly showed their remaining student subscription converting to Pro access through December 2027. However, on October 24, Google issued an unsolicited refund, leaving them without either subscription.
A UK student described a similar experience after paying £4.79 for an upgrade. The cancellation also left their Google storage full, reportedly forcing them to subscribe again to restore capacity. That makes this more than a dispute over AI features. Students who relied on their additional Google One storage could suddenly find themselves unable to upload files or continue backing up photos.
The situation isn’t getting any easier for those seeking help. A screenshot of an email shared on X, purportedly from Google One support, shows a case escalated to Level 2 support, with the affected student asked to provide eight pieces of information, including SheerID verification screenshots, cancellation and refund emails, account age verification screenshots, their physical location, and university details.
It’s unclear whether this checklist is standard troubleshooting or specific to these cancellations.
Here’s where things get particularly complicated. Google’s official policy already states that upgrading from a 12-month student trial to a paid membership makes users ineligible to claim the free offer again. Under normal circumstances, that wouldn’t be a problem because students would retain their upgraded AI Pro subscriptions. But with Google reportedly canceling those upgrades without their consent, affected students are finding themselves stuck on the free tier, with no obvious way back to their original benefits.
The controversy isn’t simply that Google took away the free student plans. It’s that students accepted legitimate upgrades, Google allegedly canceled those upgrades, and its existing trial restrictions may now prevent those students from recovering what they originally had.
We’ve reached out to Google for clarification on the cancellations, unexpected refunds, and whether affected students can recover their original benefits. We’ll update this article as soon as we hear back.
