After Gemini, another Google app may be coming to macOS

A large chunk of Google’s consumer apps, including Photos, Drive, Gemini, Sheets, and Docs, are already available for Apple’s iOS and iPadOS platforms. However, the list is smaller for macOS. The arrival of a standalone Gemini app has changed that to some extent, and we’re now seeing early evidence that the Google app may be next on that list.

In the recently released version 26.36.30 update of Google Play Services, we found a direct reference to a standalone macOS app that simply reads: MAC_GOOGLE_APP. This follows the wide rollout of the Google app for Windows in April, which had been available since September 2025 as part of a Search Labs experiment.

While there’s not much more to go on beyond the screenshot above, this is the earliest sign that a Google app could be in the works for macOS.

It’s worth remembering that simply spotting references to an app doesn’t confirm its existence. But based on recent developments, specifically with the arrival of the Windows app earlier this year, it shouldn’t come as a major surprise if macOS followed suit.

On Windows, you can open the Google app with a simple Alt + Space shortcut, with AI Mode set as the default. However, the app allows users to set other search modes.

It’s hard to tell what shape the Google app for Mac will take, since it appears to be in the early stages of development. That also makes it hard to estimate a rollout date, though we hopefully won’t have to wait long to find out.
