Google Assistant finally makes its way to Sonos speakers
When our friends at SoundGuys first reviewed the Sonos One near the end of 2017, they were left pleading for Google Assistant support. The speakers were generally well received with a great soundstage and a decent price, but being locked to Amazon’s ecosystem was a huge drag. Many of us at DGiT Media love using Google Assistant, and without proper support from Google, the speakers didn’t fit properly into our lifestyle.
Fortunately, Sonos promised support for the virtual assistant down the road. The company ensured us it was AI agnostic, and wanted to let the user decide what ecosystem fit best into their lifestyle. We heard nothing about the update until August of 2018, when the company told us it was delaying Google support until the holidays. In November, it delayed it one more time, pushing that timeline out into 2019.
Now, CES 2019 is in full swing, and it seems like a better time than ever to announce that Google Assistant is finally making its way to Sonos speakers.
Premium speakers like the Sonos One and Sonos Beam will be getting the update to enable things like music, podcast, and radio playback via voice, and Sonos has also announced that older Sonos speakers will be getting Assistant capabilities as well. Existing Wi-Fi-connected speakers will be issued a software update enabling them to be recognized by the Assistant, so you can tell your Google Home Mini to play music in the living room.
The update makes the company’s speakers more useful than ever, and we’re happy they can finally fit in with our Assistant-enabled smart homes. If you have a set of Sonos speakers, you should expect an update in the coming weeks.
