TL;DR
  • Google Chat is getting automatic AI-powered meeting recaps that summarize discussions, decisions, and assigned action items.
  • Recaps appear directly in meeting chats, complete with links to Gemini notes, recordings, and transcripts, so participants can catch up without digging through files.
  • The feature is rolling out gradually to eligible Google Workspace subscribers.

There’s always that one meeting where everyone agrees on the next steps, only for half the team to forget who promised what by lunchtime. Then comes the frantic search through notes, recordings, and chat messages to piece everything together. Google wants to put an end to that familiar office headache with a new Google Chat feature that brings the important stuff straight into your conversations after a meeting.

In a blog post, Google revealed that Chat will automatically post meeting recaps once a Google Meet call ends. The feature builds on Meet’s Gemini-powered “Take notes for me” tool, turning its AI-generated notes into a handy summary that everyone in the meeting conversation can reference.

Rather than digging through lengthy transcripts, participants can quickly catch up on decisions made, what was discussed, and action items assigned to specific colleagues. The recap also includes direct links to the full Gemini notes, meeting recording, and transcript, making it especially useful for anyone who joined late or missed the meeting entirely.

There are a couple of catches, though. “Take notes for me” must be enabled, and the meeting needs an associated Google Chat conversation. Also, if the host restricts notes to hosts and co-hosts, Google won’t share the recap with the group.

Google has also considered notification fatigue. Recaps arrive silently without triggering unread badges, and participants can delete them via the three-dot menu without affecting the original notes stored in Google Drive.

The addition continues Google’s recent push to make Workspace more practical, following persistent message drafts in Chat and easier meeting participation on Android.

The rollout began October 16 for Rapid Release domains, with Scheduled Release domains following on October 27. Each rollout may take up to 15 days.

The feature is enabled by default for eligible organizations with Gemini enabled and supports Business Standard/Plus, Enterprise Standard/Plus, and Frontline Plus subscriptions.
