Googlebook is finally official with 5 flagship Android-powered laptops starting at $899

Google is officially entering a new chapter in the laptop market with the Googlebook platform finally going mainstream after months of anticipation, leaks, and teasers.

What we’ve known so far as Google’s Aluminium OS finally has an official name: Googlebook OS. Built on the Android technology stack with foundations from Chrome OS, the new platform is designed to turn a premium laptop into a true companion for your Android phone.

What is a Googlebook?

For years, Google’s laptop strategy has centered on Chromebooks and Chrome OS. Chromebooks helped establish Google as a major player in education and other markets, but the company now wants to do more with laptops, particularly for Android users who have traditionally struggled with phone-to-PC features.

Google describes Googlebook as a “totally fresh approach to computing,” bringing together Android, ChromeOS, Gemini, and premium laptop hardware from major manufacturers.

The idea is to create a laptop that feels more natural to use for Android phone users while retaining what makes a desktop OS useful, such as a full Chrome browser, desktop apps, a proper file manager, Linux support, and a full terminal environment.

Google is also trying to solve some of the biggest problems Android users have had when moving between their phone and laptop, and make the two devices feel like part of the same ecosystem.

The first Googlebooks are now available for preorder, with prices starting at $899.

What does it take to be a Googlebook?

Google isn’t treating the Googlebook name as simply another branding exercise. The launch lineup consists of flagship laptops, with Google setting a fairly high hardware benchmark for what qualifies as a Googlebook.

Every Googlebook starts with 16GB of RAM, with some models offering up to 32GB, while storage starts at 256GB on several models. Displays must be touch-enabled and can support up to 2.8K OLED, while the machines use premium materials such as aluminum, magnesium alloy, and carbon fiber.

Google also requires dedicated AI hardware. The launch machines use processors from Intel and Qualcomm with NPUs capable of more than 45 TOPS of on-device AI performance. Battery life is rated at up to 14 hours of video playback and 16 hours of web browsing.

There are also some visible requirements for Googlebook, including backlit keyboards and the company’s new Glowbar.

Five new Googlebook laptops

While Google is behind the platform, the company isn’t making any Googlebook laptops itself. At least not yet. Instead, it has partnered with Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo for the first generation of Googlebook laptops.

Here’s what the launch lineup looks like:

The Acer is the only convertible in the initial lineup, while the ASUS is the lightest at around 1kg. Lenovo goes in the opposite direction with a larger 15.3-inch display aimed at productivity.

All five machines use premium materials, touchscreens, and backlit keyboards. Some models also include haptic trackpads, fingerprint sensors, and face authentication.

One of the most recognizable features of all the new Googlebook laptops is the Glowbar. The light strip sits on the exterior of the laptops and lights up when you boot the machines. It can also show the battery level and display animations when you’re interacting with Gemini. Think of it as a version of Pixel HiLight, but for laptops. Google says it’s also opening up the Glowbar to developers so that they can create their own interactive animations for it.

When you set up your Googlebook, your Android phone’s settings, saved passwords, Wi-Fi networks, and messages will move over to the Googlebook seamlessly. Google says the transfer is protected by end-to-end encryption.

Googlebook offers several continuity features that help you easily move between your phone and laptop.

The Continue On feature lets you pick up a task where you left off on your phone. The Files app gives you access to files and photos stored on your phone directly from your laptop. The Cast My Apps feature lets you stream and interact with phone apps inside a desktop window.

The Chrome browser also gets the same treatment. If you start something in Chrome on your phone, you can continue it on your Googlebook.

As for security, Googlebook uses the same basic architecture as ChromeOS, including the Titan hardware root of trust, defense-in-depth protections, and on-device malware detection.

It also has a Level 5 security-certified pKVM hypervisor, which isolates the Linux environment while still giving developers access to a full terminal and other tools.

Google is also promising up to 10 years of updates and feature drops for Googlebook laptops.

Gemini is built into Googlebook OS

Quite obviously, Gemini is a big part of the Googlebook experience.

One of the key AI features of all Googlebook laptops is Magic Pointer. When you give your cursor a quick wiggle, Gemini will appear over whatever you’re currently looking at. The AI helper will then understand text, images, and the context on your screen.

Google demonstrated the feature by highlighting a marathon training plan and asking Gemini to turn it into a schedule in Google Calendar. Similarly, Gemini will be able to do things like analyze an email and help figure out if it’s legitimate or spam.

The company says Gemini doesn’t constantly watch what’s happening on your screen, and only comes alive when summoned.

Then there’s also Rambler, located next to the Quick Insert key. The borrowed Pixel feature turns your spoken thoughts into organized notes, complete with headings, action items, and other formatting. It can also handle multiple languages in the same conversation.

Lastly, the Create My Widget is also making its way to Googlebook laptops to let you describe a widget in plain language and have Googlebook create it for you without requiring any coding.

You get Chrome, Android apps, and Linux

The Googlebook platform isn’t abandoning the traditional desktop experience in favor of Android.

You still get the full Chrome browser with extensions, alongside access to millions of Android apps through the Play Store. Google says many apps are optimized for large screens, and a curated section of the Play Store will highlight apps that work particularly well on Googlebooks. However, apps that are not optimized for Googlebook will still be available through the Play Store.

Google also highlights apps that are already optimized for desktop, including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, CapCut, Netflix, and HBO Max.

For developers and power users, Googlebook includes Antigravity, Google’s AI development environment, as well as a full Linux terminal. Google says users can run tools such as Claude Code and Antigravity CLI directly on the laptop.

Price and availability

Googlebook laptops start at $899, with the Acer Googlebook 14 being the cheapest model in the launch lineup.

Pre-orders are now open through the Google Store, Best Buy, and select retailers. The first Googlebooks will go on sale in the US on October 4, followed by Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, and Australia on October 5.

Every Googlebook also includes 12 months of Google AI Pro with 5TB of cloud storage, along with Gemini Advanced tools. Buyers also get three months of YouTube Premium and Adobe Photoshop.
