Google Home expands to all Wear OS 3 smartwatches
- The Google Home app won’t be exclusive to the Pixel Watch.
- Any smartwatch with Wear OS 3 or later will be able to install the app.
- Some features are yet to be supported.
It was expected that the wearable version of the Google Home app would come to the Pixel Watch, but nothing suggested that it would be exclusive to Google’s new device. Now it’s been confirmed that Google Home will be available for other smartwatches.
During the Made by Google event earlier today, an updated version of the Google Home app was released on the Play Store. The new update is needed to allow Google Home to be installed on the Pixel Watch. Although it was expected that the app would rollout to the Pixel Watch first, it’s surprising that the update is also allowing other smartwatches to download the app at the same time.
While other smartwatch users can download the app right now, there are some limitations to be aware of. For instance, only smartwatches with Wear OS 3 or later can download the app. It’s also just a “public preview” of the app, so there could be bugs you need to look out for. Additionally, some features are not yet supported in this public preview.
According to Android Central, the app is currently compatible with Galaxy Watch 5, Watch 5 Pro, Watch 4, Watch 4 Classic, and Montblanc Summit 3. Once installed, you can control your smart home devices, like smart lights or a smart thermostat, like you would with the other versions of the app.
Although it’s essentially a beta at the moment, the full version of the software should be available down the line. As with any beta, take caution if you decide to download it.
