This Google Meet upgrade makes large meetings less awkward on Android
Oct 14, 2026 — 5:54 AM ET

- Google Meet on Android will soon let eligible live-stream viewers join the main meeting directly.
- The switch works without reopening invite links or leaving the app, as long as the viewer was invited to both the stream and the meeting.
- The rollout starts October 19 and will be available to Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and personal Google accounts.
Google Meet has picked up a surprising number of useful upgrades lately. Google has added Microsoft Teams interoperability, expanded its meeting note-taking tools, and even started preparing for a post-quantum future. Its latest improvement is much simpler, but anyone who regularly sits through large company meetings may appreciate it.
Google has announced that Meet users on Android will soon be able to move directly from watching a livestream into the main meeting with their camera and microphone.
This works only if you’ve been invited to both the livestream and the main meeting. As Google’s screenshots show, attendees can initially choose to watch the stream rather than join the call. Once inside, eligible viewers will see an option to “Leave and join the call,” allowing them to join the regular meeting without reopening the invite link or switching apps.
It’s a useful addition to Google’s system for handling larger Meet events. Google previously introduced Adaptive meetings and later expanded the feature so attendees can be moved into a livestream when a meeting reaches its contributor limit. This new option makes that arrangement more flexible in the opposite direction too. Someone who starts out watching can jump into the conversation when needed.
The same role-switching capability is already available on Google Meet for the web and iOS, so Android is essentially catching up.
Google says the rollout starts October 19 and will take more than 15 days. It’ll be available to all Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and personal Google accounts.
