Add Android Authority on Google:
TL;DR
  • Google Meet and Microsoft Teams can now work across supported Android-based meeting-room hardware.
  • Meet hardware can join Teams calls, while Android-based Microsoft Teams Rooms can join Google Meet meetings.
  • The feature began rolling out on October 1 and should reach eligible Google Workspace customers within 1-3 days.

If you’ve ever walked into a meeting room only to realize the call is on Microsoft Teams while the room is set up for Google Meet, you’ll know how unnecessarily complicated something as simple as joining a video call can become. Google started addressing that problem last month when it previewed a new interoperability feature that would let Meet and Teams hardware work together.

The idea was to remove some of the usual barriers between the two platforms. With the feature, a meeting room equipped with Android-based Google Meet hardware could join a Microsoft Teams call, while a Microsoft Teams Room running Android could do the same with a Google Meet call. So, if your company primarily uses Meet but a client sends you a Teams invite, you wouldn’t have to reach for a laptop or switch rooms just because everyone happens to be using a different video conferencing service.

At the time, though, Google was only giving us an early look at how this would work. Now, the company says the feature is generally available, meaning supported meeting-room hardware can finally start taking advantage of it.

Google began rolling it out on October 1 and says it could take 1 to 3 days to appear. It’s available to Google Workspace customers using Google Meet hardware that runs on Android/AOSP. One thing worth keeping in mind is that the Android part here refers to dedicated meeting-room hardware running Android/AOSP, not the Google Meet or Microsoft Teams apps on your phone or tablet.

So, this obviously won’t change much if you take all your meetings on your phone or laptop. But in offices where different teams, clients, and companies bounce between Meet and Teams all day, not having to think about which logo is on the meeting invite could make joining a call considerably less frustrating.
