Google Photos could soon let you choose a consistent look for your home feed

Your Google Photos library has seen a handful of changes recently, while more are on the horizon. We can now report on a potential future addition that aims to keep your home feed clean, but only for some layouts.

Google Photos currently lets you choose between Comfortable, Day, and Month layouts for your media, which you can change via the Photos view menu from the three-dot button in the top right of the home page. Unlike the Comfortable layout, users on Day or Month layouts will notice some photo or video thumbnails appearing larger than the rest. A future version of the Google Photos app could let users disable this with a dedicated toggle.

In version 7.92.0 of Google Photos, we activated a new toggle in Photos view that lets users disable what Google calls Feature photos. The toggle’s description explains that when enabled, it can “automatically enlarge photos in your grid to highlight notable moments.”

While I haven’t personally been bothered by some pictures or videos appearing larger on the grid, it’s clear Google thinks this may be an issue for some users. The Feature photos toggle could be enabled by default when (or if) it’s rolled out, and disabling it should give your home page a more consistent, uniform look, as you can see above.

This toggle doesn’t appear to affect the Comfortable layout right now, though it’s unclear whether this is a temporary limitation or if Feature photos would be restricted to just the Day and Month layouts.

While the toggle appears to work as intended in this version of the Photos app during our testing, we can’t conclusively say whether it will roll out anytime soon. This potential visual update follows a major visual overhaul of the app not too long ago.
