Pixel 7's camera may offer only limited improvements over the Pixel 6
- The Google Pixel 7’s camera may be identical to the Pixel 6.
- Google may rely on software and sensor upgrades for improvements.
Google’s next Pixel model may not offer much of an upgrade to its camera, at least not on the hardware front.
Leaker Yogesh Brar has made an interesting claim regarding the Pixel 7, saying the hardware could be largely unchanged from the current Pixel 6. That doesn’t necessarily mean there won’t be improvements, but those improvements may be the result of software and sensor upgrades.
We will most likely see the same optics on the Pixel 7/ 7 Pro that Pixel 6/ 6 Pro had.Sensors might get see some optimization, rest of the magic will be done by software— Yogesh Brar (@heyitsyogesh) April 14, 2022
Smartphone camera quality has increased by orders of magnitude over the last few years, but may be reaching a point of diminishing returns where the average user doesn’t see a tremendous amount of improvement from one generation to the next. As a result, if Brar’s leak is correct, it wouldn’t be a surprise for the Pixel 7 to have similar, or even identical, camera hardware as the Pixel 6. With the incredible quality of the existing hardware, turning to software to fine-tune the experience is a logical and cost-effective option for further improvement.
Only time will tell if Brar is correct. Either way, however, it seems the Pixel 7 could still feature some improvements over the Pixel 6.
