Google says soft-touch glass coming to Pixel 7, then changes its mind
- Google says the Pixel 7 will not have soft-touch glass.
- Google had previously said the new phone would have a matte finish.
Google Pixel fans hoping to see a return of soft-touch glass on the Pixel 7 are in for a disappointment as the company reverses course on earlier-reported plans.
Soft-touch glass is the term that refers to the matte glass back on the Pixel 3 and 4. The overall effect was a subdued look with a certain class. With the Pixel 6 series, Google went with a high-gloss glass, but the company said it planned to bring back soft-touch with the Pixel 7. According to YouTuber Marques Brownlee, Google has now reversed course and said the Pixel 7 glass will remain high-gloss.
Update: Google has confirmed to me that the Pixel 7 will in fact NOT be soft touch glass, despite previously telling us all that it would be 🙃— Marques Brownlee (@MKBHD) May 12, 2022
It’s unclear what prompted the about-face, but users who preferred soft-touch glass are sure to be unhappy. Fortunately, Samsung and other manufacturers still offer phones with a matte finish.
