Mystery Google phone shows up on FCC: Pixel 7a or Pixel foldable?
- A new Google phone has come up in the FCC database.
- It could be the Pixel 7a.
- The documents confirm its connectivity options.
An unnamed Google phone has stopped by FCC, as spotted by Droid Life. The device in question comes bearing model number GHL1X. It seems to have additional variants with model numbers G82U8, G0DZQ, and GWKK3.
Our first guess is this could be the Pixel 7a. The FCC application clearly classifies it as a phone, so we know it’s not the upcoming Pixel Tablet. There are also no references of the phone being a foldable. Previous FCC documents for foldables like the Surface Duo have mentioned two screens in the testing process, but there’s no such mention in this application for Google’s device.
That said, testing documents show the mysterious Google phone has Wi-Fi 6E support, Sub-6GHz 5G, NFC, and Bluetooth connectivity.
The Pixel 7a could easily carry all those connectivity specs. So could any other Google phone. But the fact that the FCC application does not mention the speedy 5G mmWave connectivity strongly suggests this is the Pixel 7a. The Pixel 6a also launched with multiple regional models, but only the Verizon variant supported mmWave 5G.
If this was the rumored foldable phone Google is expected to launch sometime soon, it would surely feature 5G mmWave, given it’s likely a premium device like the Pixel 7 flagships.
Anyhow, we’ll update this article if more information comes out about this unknown Google phone. For what it’s worth, the Pixel 6a also stopped by FCC in the first quarter of last year, followed by a May launch. So we may very well be looking at the Pixel 7a here.
